Growing Desert Rose (Adenium Obesum)

I have often been taken by a plant known as Desert Rose.  It has been hybridized and comes in hundreds of colors.  You can get seeds from many e-bay sellers.  Often the pictures are stunning but since the plants are usually hybrids, it is unlikely that plants grown from seed will look just like their parents; thus you have to wait and see to find out what you really got.

Currently, I am growing 6 varieties: Chorfah, Devine Creation, Triple Salmon King, Black Edition, Purple Mandala, and DB Sunrise.

It’s not too hard to grow these from seed.  My seeds are about a year old and I still had decent success with them sprouting.  Here’s how I did it:

  1. Get a fast draining cactus mix from your local nursery.  I just picked up a bag from the nursery down the street.  It wasn’t a name brand, just a local mix.  Lot’s of people don’t like the ones from miracle grow and others so they make their own with the following ingredients:
    • 65% perlite
    • 5% rock
    • 5% sand
    • 20% top soil with coir or a small percentage of peat
  2. Adenium Seeds

  3. I plant the seeds just below the soil in peat pots.  Then place in an old tupperware container and fill with water.  Put the whole thing in a large ziplock bag and partially close it.  You still want some airflow so you don’t get mold. The temperature needs to be between 75 – 95 degrees so you may want to pick up an inexpensive heat pad from Lowes or Home Depot.

  4. Things should sprout in 3-5 days.  Sometimes they take a bit longer but nearly all my plants are up within this time frame if they are going to sprout at all.
  5. This is what my current brood looks like.  They are only a few weeks old so I am anxious for them to bloom so I know what their true identity is!
